The WSET Level 3 Award in Spirits is an advanced-level qualification for professionals and enthusiasts wishing to acquire a detailed understanding of the spirits of the world and develop the tasting skills required to accurately describe and evaluate a spirit.

This qualification is intended to build on knowledge and skills gained from the Level 2 Award in Spirits. You’ll acquire a deep theoretical understanding of the techniques used in spirit production, from the processing of raw materials to post-distillation operations. Through a combination of tasting and the application of theoretical knowledge you will learn to explain confidently why spirits look and taste the way they do and how and why they differ from each other.

Prerequisites

  • It is recommended that you hold the WSET Level 2 Award in Spirits, or can demonstrate the equivalent level of knowledge.

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years of age to participate.

Course Structure

  • 9 weeks online self-paced study, with access to a WSET online moderator for the duration of the course.

  • Minimum requirement of 52 hours of private study time, in addition to 30 hours of guided learning time.

What you’ll learn:

  • A detailed understanding of the techniques used in spirit production:

    • Processing of raw materials

    • Alcoholic fermentation

    • Distillation

    • Post-distillation practices

  • Factors affecting the style and quality of spirits, studying eleven core spirit categories in detail:

    • Scotch Whisky

    • Bourbon

    • Rye Whiskey

    • Tennessee Whiskey

    • Cognac

    • Armagnac

    • Caribbean rum

    • Tequila

    • Mezcal

    • Vodka

    • Gin

    • An overview of 23 additional spirit categories, focusing on:

Exam Details

  • 2 hour 40 minute closed-book, in-person examination in Richmond, VA.

    • Section 1: Blind tasting of TWO spirits

    • Section 2: 50 multiple-choice questions and 10 short answer questions

  • Candidates who fail a qualification will be allowed to resit the exam until successful. The fee for each resit attempt is $140 for Tasting, $220 for Theory, or $275 for both.

  • Students with disabilities or documented special educational needs may apply for reasonable adjustments for either RI or paper exams. Applications must be conferred to WSET at least 8 weeks before the exam date.   • VAWSA receives exam results from WSET within 12 weeks of the exam date, and reports those scores individually to candidates upon receipt.

    • Hard copy textbooks may be purchased for an additional fee of $105.

  • One day, in-person tasting calibration session in advance of the exam.

  • Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET digital certificate and lapel pin.

  • Tasting samples are NOT included with online courses. A list of suggested spirits styles for tasting throughout the course is provided in the online modules.
